The Organizing Committee for the UNESCO World Greek Language Day celebrations in Victoria is planning an event to be held on Monday the 9th of February 2026,
The event will be held at the Capitol Theatre, RMIT University, 119 Swanston Street, Melbourne (opposite the Melbourne Town Hall), from 8.00 to 10.15 pm. The celebration programme is currently planned to include the following items:
- Participation of three choirs: The Melbourne Camerata Chorus, the Eikon Artists Choir and the Greek Day Schools’ Students’ Choir.
- The event will open with the first two stages of the Symphony Mythodeia of Vangelis Papathanasiou.
- Musical Director, Andreas Koikas and an ensemble of 12 organs.
- The Keynote Address by former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland, The Hon. Anthe Philippides.
- Children’s Reception Orchestra welcoming the guests, comprising students from Melbourne’s Day Schools.
- The musical ensemble led by Andreas Koikas and the overall members of the Choir will be directed by renowned Conductor Douglas Heywood, OAM based on E. Kalomiris’ Symphonic Composition Levendia: (Nikitiria Hymn).
- Two Sopranos of Lyric Theatre will accompany the Choirs.
- Music and choir performances commencing from Byzantium to modern era, incorporating the works of Vangelis, Kalomiris, Theodorakis, Hatzidakis, and Xarchakos.
- Narrating sections of the speech by Odysseas Elytis at the Swedish Academy and five stanzas from the poetic creation of our National Poet, Dionysios Solomos, Hymn to Freedom.
- Awarding the Aristeion of Gratitude to three Australian Philhellenes for their contribution to the Greek language and culture.
- Epilogue: The National Anthem, musical orchestration by Andreas Koikas and participation of all three choirs and sopranos.
